Abstract : Humans play a critical role in cybersecurity. They configure security objectives, analyze risks and make decisions to mitigate attacks. To do this, they need a holistic view of the systems to be secured. Interfaces to manage cybersecurity are typically provided in what are called security operations centers (SOCs). These SOCs typically use 2D visualizations to provide security awareness, enable risk analysis and cybersecurity management. However, with the recent availability of devices to access virtual reality (VR), namely headsets are becoming available, richer 3D representations are becoming accessible. The talk will present our current works at the cyberCNI.fr chair towards the virtualization SOC cybersecurity functionality. In doing so, the SOC moves from the physical world to cyberspace, and even to the metaverse. We envision and work on a distributed collaborative SOC in cyberspace. We discuss the challenges, show our current solutions and discuss our vision. Bio : Prof. Dr. Marc-Oliver Pahl heads the industrial Chair Cybersecurity for Critical Networked Infrastructures (https://cyberCNI.fr) at IMT Atlantique Rennes, France. The chair currently hosts 18 professors, 9 PhDs, 4 PostDocs, and multiple engineers and interns. Marc-Oliver is an adjunct professor of Carleton University in Canada. Marc-Oliver is Vice President of the German Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) (germany.acm.org). He heads the Future Education activities of the German-French Academy for the Industry of the Future (future-industry.org). Marc-Oliver’s research focuses on a holistic approach to cybersecurity with an emphasis on collaborative approaches including VR-based cybersecurity interfaces and novel side-channel-based anomaly detection, and federated learning. He is an experienced teacher and an eLearning pioneer, holding several teaching awards. He continuously hosts events for larger audience such as the TALK.CYBERcni.fr speaker series and the future-iot.org PhD school series.
