Abstract: In IT-Security, the traditional security model was restricted to the attacker and the security mechanism. Nowadays, it is well known that this view is too limited. Due to the entanglement with other factors, e.g., the underlying hardware and software, further threats exist. Popular examples are side-channel attacks that exploit the implementation of the security mechanisms or social attacks that try to trick the user. In this talk, we discuss that the entanglement does not only impose new security risks, but can enable novel security solutions as well. We present some of our results where using a more comprehensive view and taking “external” factors into account allowed for increasing the security level. Speaker's bio: Frederik Armknecht is an associate professor for cryptography at the University of Mannheim, Germany. From 2006-2007, he worked as a Research Staff member in the Mobile Internet group at NEC Europe Ltd. From 2007-2008, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. From 2008-2009, he was an assistant professor at the Ruhr-University Bochum, where he headed the group for cryptographic methods and security models. From 2009-2010, he was a visiting professor at Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany. His research interests include cloud security, lightweight cryptography, and security for cyber-physical systems.
