We present the design and implementation of a VOD server that addresses the issues of storage,
retrieval, and scheduling of a large number of video objects as well as the reliability aspects related to striping (distributing) video objects over several hard disks. The result is a multi-platform, distributed video server built from off-the-shelf components that is able to cope with various kinds of heterogeneity (number of disks, storage volume of disks, number of disk servers, variety of striping techniques, range of redundancy codecs). Further, our video server runs on multiple platforms (SOLARIS, Windows NT). Reliability is guaranteed through the optional use of parity-or mirroring-based reliability techniques.
