Title: Machine Learning and network theory in Bioinformatics. Abstract: It is nowadays established how the arising of specific medical conditions is not a consequence of the "presence/absence" of single genes, but involves complex time varying networks of genes. In these networks, genes interact in order to accomplish all the tasks necessary for the life of single cells. As a consequence, we have recently witnessed a shift from a biology based on genes to a biology in which the functional gene networks or pathways are the main actors and machine learning is the key tool to discover and interpret them. I will give an overview of machine learning approaches in modern biology and the challenges of network inference and comparison, and conclude the talk with some examples of applications.
