This paper presents a classification of routing design issues for mobile ad hoc networks, and their impact on routing protocol performance. This classification shows a need for a multimode routing protocol in order to satisfy both application requirements and network properties. An alternative simple loop-free bandwidth-efficient distributed routing algorithm, denoted as distributed dynamic routing (DDR), is also presented which can provide a multimode routing infrastructure for routing protocols in mobile ad hoc networks. Using simulation, we study the performance of DDR in terms of packet delivery ratio, average end-to-end delay, and routing over-head under the various load and pause time.
