This chapter summarizes the related work on the 5G radio access network (RAN) architecture in 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and the 5G Public Private Partnership (5G PPP). It then lists the 5G RAN architecture requirements, as identified in 3GPP and 5G PPP. The chapter dives into details of the 5G RAN protocol stack architecture and related network functions (NFs), elaborating on the notion of NFs in the context of different air interface variants (AIVs), possible service‐specific protocol stack optimizations, and NF instantiations in the context of multi‐service and multi‐tenancy. It ventures into the 5G RAN support of multi‐connectivity, either among multiple 5G radio legs, 5G and Long Term Evolution (LTE) or enhanced LTE (eLTE), or 5G and Wi‐Fi. The chapter goes in detail into vertical and horizontal split options in the 5G RAN, which are seen as essential to support diverse deployment scenarios, and into aspects of RAN programmability.
