Despite tremendous progress in communication networks and storage technologies, the needs for efficient image and video compression algorithms remain high in demand, This talk will start by giving an overview of the reasons of why there is such an interest in compression technologies specifically for multimedia information. It will then talk about current trends and ideas in compression with emphasis on both image and video coding, which require the highest volume of information in their representations. Both technologies under consideration in international standards such as MPEG, and alternatives solutions will be discussed and compared in terms of advantages and drawbacks. The talk will start with a brief overview of MMSPG at EPFL and its current research activities.
