Scalable data management systems: distribution, storage and processing of large amounts of data

Michiardi, Pietro
Habilitation à diriger des recherches (French qualification for conducting Phd theses)

The talk will briefly cover topics related to data distribution and storage, with highlights on algorithmic problems related to data replication and data transfer scheduling. The bulk of the presentation will then focus on "data-intensive scalable computing" systems, which covers the four main research lines of the Distributed Systems Group:

- Machine learning applied to recommender systems and time-series data

- Optimisation of high-level languages to produce parallel, functional programs

- Resource allocation problems in parallel processing frameworks

- Virtualisation and software defined network performance For the above topics, the talk will overview the essential research questions addressed by the group, with highlights on a selection of established research activities.
