Abstract: This talk focuses on communications systems that are subject to two competing objectives: (a) Reliable information transmission to a receiver; and (b) reliable energy transmission to an energy harvester. Given that information receivers and energy harvesters might not be necessarily colocated, this technique rises as an alternative to wirelessly powering up low-energy IOT devices, e.g., sensors that might transmit once in a long period. The objective of the talk is to analyze the fundamental limits of these systems. The first part of the talk studies a single point-to-point link in order to highlight the trade-off between information rate and energy rate. Using these intuitions, multiple access channels are studied from the perspective of centralized networks, e.g., cellular systems, and the information-energy capacity region is fully characterized. Finally, the effect of channel-output feedback is analyzed and it is shown that it can at most double the energy rate when the information rates are kept constant. Biography: Samir M. Perlaza (S07-M-11-SM15) received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications (Telecom ParisTech) in 2008 and 2011, respectively. Since 2013, he is a research scientist with the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique, Automatique et Mathématiques Appliquées (INRIA), France, and a visiting research scholar at the Department of Electrical Engineering in Princeton University. Previously, from 2008 to 2011, he was a research engineer at France Télécom - Orange Labs (Paris, France). He has held long-term academic appointments at the Alcatel-Lucent Chair in Flexible Radio at Supélec; Princeton University and the University of Houston. Dr. Perlaza’s research interests are in the areas of information theory and signal processing, and their applications in wireless networks, energy systems, and related fields. Among his publications in these areas is the edited book on Data Analytics for Power Systems (Cambridge University Press) to appear in the first quarter of 2020. Dr. Perlaza currently serves as an Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS and IET Smart Grid Journal. Recognition of his work includes several awards from the European Commission, including an Alban Fellowship in 2006 during his stay at EURECOM, France; a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship in 2015; and the fellowship “make our planet great again” from the French Embassy in the USA during 2019.
