2011 was marked by another highlight. The
EURECOM team organized an assessment cam-
paign to find a large number of photos among
100,000 which illustrated specific events. Seven
teams from around the world contributed to the
success of the competitionwhose aimwas to com-
pare the performance of their tools on the same
basis. The calendar is already marked for 2012
but this time with 10 million photos and videos.
“In addition to reliving a past event, EventMedia
will propose upcoming events to a user based on
his past social activity”, says Raphaël Troncy. This
means the application could recommend activi-
ties based on past choices. But many challenges
remain: we need to develop tools that canmanage
an even greater quantity of data, and improve
the integration of diverse media and the automa-
tion of knowledge extraction. But the ambition of
EURECOM researchers doesn’t stop here!
They are studying the possibility to detect an
abnormally highmedia flow on one given subject
to deduct an upcoming event! Imagine anticipat-
ing an earthquake or a popular uprising. This is
certainly a tool full of promises.
