Petros Elia
Petros Elia, designingmodern
networks for wireless communications
is one of themain topics you are
working on. Why is it so crucial today?
Petros Elia:
“These networks are clearly the
telecommunications networks of the future. We
are designing them so they can allow communi-
cation ofmassive amounts of information, which
is crucial for the society of the future. The range
of potential applications is so wide it makes it
very exciting: A heart monitoring system could
automaticallywarndoctors of an imminent heart
attack, a team of doctors from around the world
could perform precise surgery on a critically
wounded patient in an ambulance going to Nice
hospital... It could also be possible to control
car traffic to avoid accidents and reduce energy
consumption. It is a great challenge! Plus, we are
asked to use small and environment-friendly
devices to support dynamically
changing amounts of informa-
tion, over environments that
are unknown, harsh and
volatile”.
What are themain
technical challenges
in improvingsuch
wirelessnetworks?
P. E.:
“Randomness is often
the main challenge: this can
kill signals. Our work seeks to
mitigate, and sometimes use,
this randomness. In order to do
that, we use information, queue-
