COMSYS TALK : "Wireless Channel Charting for Massive MIMO "

Abstract: Channel charting consists in the application of dimensionality reduction and manifold learning (both methods stemming from the field of machine learning) to the channel state information (CSI) signals of wireless communication transceivers. It is an emerging framework rooted in machine learning. It enables pseudo-positioning of the transmitting devices in the abstract, low-dimensional space of the channel chart, thus enabling the infrastructure base stations or wireless access points to perform tasks relevant to emerging wireless networks (which are typically location-dependent) without requiring access to the actual user location information. Prominent application examples are localization relative to points-of-interest, U.E. grouping, cell handover, U.E. path prediction, predictive rate control, assisted beam-finding, etc. In this talk I will give an exhaustive overview of the burgeoning research field of channel charting, keeping the discussion at the intersection of machine learning, numerical optimization, channel modeling, and communication theory. It will cover the basics of dimensionality reduction (including algorithmic approaches and performance metrics), and its application to CSI, in an intuitive and widely accessible manner. Examples of channel charting applied to measured data will be presented. Finally, the potential applications to radio access networks (5G, 6G) will be discussed. Bio: Maxime Guillaud (http://research.mguillaud.net/) is a Senior Research Fellow (Directeur de recherche) at INRIA in Lyon, France. He has over 20 years expertise in the domain of wireless communications, in both academic and industrial research environments. His expertise lies the physical layer of radio access networks, including transceiver algorithms, channel modeling, and modulation design. He received the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from ENSEA, Cergy, France, in 2000, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering and communications from Telecom ParisTech, Paris, France, in 2005. From 2000 to 2001, he was a Research Engineer with Lucent Bell Laboratories (now Nokia), Holmdel, NJ, USA. From 2006 to 2010, he was a Senior Researcher with FTW, Vienna, Austria. From 2010 to 2014, he was a research associate with the Vienna University of Technology, Vienna. From 2014 to 2022, he was a research engineer with Huawei Technologies France. He is a Senior IEEE member and associate editor of the Transactions on Wireless Communications.
