Biography

Pierre A. Humblet received the Ingénieur Electricien degree from the University of Louvain in 1973, and the M.S. and Ph.D. from MIT. After graduating in 1978 he remained at MIT where he became a Professor of Electrical Engineering. In 1993 he joined the Eurécom Institute, where he headed the Mobile Communications department. In 1998 he started a Telecommunications Consulting company based in Cambridge, MA, while remaining an Adjunct Professor at the Eurecom Institute. In 2000 he also became the CTO of Astral Point Communications, Inc, in Chelmsford, MA.

His research and teaching are in the area of communication systems. His interests include both transmission issues, such as communication and information theories, and systems issues, such as protocol development and performance analysis. He contributed numerous publications, in particular on multiaccess protocols, distributed graph algorithms, telephone line modems, wireless systems and optical detection.

He has been a steady consultant to industry, e.g. with Motorola on PCM modems and with IBM and Tellabs on wavelength division multiplexing. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.
