Providing mobile users with a service quality that is both stable
and uniform is the purpose of ARTIST4G, a European project which boasts
collaboration between industrial and university research centers.
The project could have a tremendous impact on 4G standards.

oss of signal, interference.Whohas never expe-

are, our smartphones still depend on the networks
which carry our voices and data. Andwhile they are
increasingly efficient, they still have twoweaknesses.
“The closer we are to another cell, or antenna,
the greater the interference”, says David Gesbert,
head of the EURECOM teamworking on the Artist4G
project (Advanced Radio Interface Technologies for
4GSystems). “Similarly, the farther you are from the
base station antenna onwhich your communication
depends, the weaker the transmission”. To offset
these two shortfalls, some fifteenof themost affluent
European actors of themobile communications area
are working on very concrete applications.
Reducing interference…
Their objective is to provide users with a more
stable and uniform mobile service experience
in time, whether the communication is taking
place in the middle of a cell or in its vicinity.
EURECOM researchers have already published
a dozen papers on the subject since the begin-
ning of the project two years ago. Their goal is to
validate several of the existing theoretical tools
for mobile communications that have not been
experimentally tested. The common element of
these techniques is to make neighboring cells
collaborate. Today they operate independently
from one another in the physical layer.
One of our approaches consists of avoiding
interference between neighboring cells as much
as possible. Our solution is to reduce power and
select the adequate transmission bandwidths in
a dynamic and coordinatedway. With expertise in
game theory, EURECOM researchers can analyze
the performance of such a solution and optimize
