Speaker Dr. Italo Atzeni Huawei French Research Center Title: “Cellular Network Analysis: the Limitations of Network Densification” Abstract: Ultra-dense networks are foreseen as a core element to realize the vision of 5th generation (5G) wireless systems. Stochastic geometry is a mathematical framework that provides both the models and the tools for efficiently analyzing the performance of ultra-dense, heterogeneous cellular/ad hoc networks. This talk introduces the basic concepts of random spatial modeling and performance analysis of wireless networks using stochastic geometry, providing useful metrics for system-level network optimization. Then, focusing on recent works considering LOS/NLOS signal propagation and elevated base stations, it is shown that the throughput does not grow indefinitely with the base station density; instead, network densification eventually leads to near-universal outage. Biography: Italo Atzeni (S'12-M'14) received the MSc degree in telecommunications engineering from the University of Cagliari, in 2010, and the PhD degree in signal theory and communications from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia-BarcelonaTech, in 2014 (both with honors). Since 2014, he is researcher at the Mathematical and Algorithmic Sciences Lab, France Research Center, Huawei Technologies. He had previously held research appointments at the Honk Kong University of Science and Technology, in 2013, and at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia-BarcelonaTech, in 2014. His primary research interests include distributed signal processing algorithms, convex optimization theory, stochastic geometry, and their applications to large-scale wireless communication networks.
