T Technical Teaching


  • This course provides an overview of different enabling technologies for real-time signal processing applied to communication systems.
  • The basic implementation technology behind areas such as, wireless communication devices, audiovisual devices, media players, PC-based multimedia, soft modems (software radio), video gaming will be covered.
  • A hands-on approach is taken, with the aid of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, to expose students to the real-time hardware and software aspects of modern signal processing architectures.
  • The topics covered span conversion technologies (A/D, D/A), bus architectures and data acquisition systems, embedded DSP processors, PC-based DSP architectures and implementations, real-time operating systems (RTOS) aspects and system-on-chip (SoC) architectures. Specially design laboratory sessions are supported by introductory lectures on the particular area under study.

• Conversion Technology and Acquisition Systems : A/D and D/A conversion devices, bus architectures (PCI, USB, IEEE 1384). Laboratory sessions : Bandpass sampling and synthesis using typical high-performance cellular base-station devices, signal acquisition and generation across the PCI bus.
• Embedded DSP Processors : Modern embedded DSP architectures (Case study : Texas instruments C5x, C6x), applications. Laboratory sessions : Introduction to the programming the C5x family of Texas Instruments DSPs using Code Composer Studio. A real-time digital-modulation example on a C54 evaluation board.
• PC-based DSP : SIMD architectures (Case study : Pentium MMX/SSE/SSE2), applications. Laboratory sessions : SIMD programming and code profiling in C. Real-ime Video Acquisition on the PCI-bus, Encoding/Decoding using MJPEG.
• RTOS aspects and the System-on-a-chip (SoC) : Hard real-time operating systems supporting DSP (Case studies : eCOS, OMAP, RTLinus), hardware/software co-design for the system-on-a-chip. Laboratory sessions : a soft-Modem under RTLinux.
