Experimental 3G and Beyond Platform Future generations of wireless communications systems will deal with the presence of several different standards and a wide variety of services. This poses the problem of providing seamless IP-based connectivity to users. Software Radio (SR) infrastructure nodes and terminals can be configured in order to handle different standards and types of services. Motivated by the intensive activity on software radio technologies, the Wireless3G4Free team has implemented a real-time software radio communication platform to validate advanced mobile communication algorithms at all layers of the protocol stack. The platform is conceived so as to promote both industrial and academic collaboration and is already being used as a flexible testbed for integrating technological innovations from a variety of partners.
Openair interface approach is based on the convergence of three technological trends: Collaborative wireless standards (e.g. 3GPP, 802.11), Next Generation Internet Technology (Mobile-IPv6, DiffServ, etc.) and open-source software. The components are combined to provide innovative, cost and spectrally efficient solutions for providing high-end Internet services to mobile users. Specifically, our approach allows for: Advanced signal processing techniques for ensuring high spectral efficiency Smart antenna processing Iterative coding Multiuser scheduling Higher layers protocols & services (direct interconnection with IPv4 and IPv6 networks and WLAN systems) Joint radio resource, mobility and QoS management across different radio access technologies
